Henri Lloyd may be best known as a British Sailing Heritage brand, but their new ‘Country Gent’ boot for AW10 is a contemporary twist for this traditional brand.  We’ve seen the vintage lace-up boot make a massive comeback over the last year, with the likes of AllSaints, French Connection, Topman, River Island and Asos all featuring the tapered drop crotch carrot fit or arc fit jeans with either a leather derby or military boot.

Heritage is a key theme for the AW10 season and these hand crafted derby boots are individually burnished to create a distinctive vintage look to the full grain leather.  The Charlebury boot is a modern take on the classic derby boot style makes use of high quality resin ‘oiled’ canvas, sourced from Italian Mills, while the lining is the original brushed cotton Henri Lloyd check fabric.

Palladium held a launch party last week in association with Size? where the Stylenerds saw the likes of London radio Pirate MC’s: Jammer, J2K, JME, Logan Sama & Miss Dynamite. The thing is, if you look at the types of people that wear boots nowadays the last thing you would expect them to be into would be Grime (or any other sub-genre). Although this may seem strange, I believe it works perfectly with Palladium boots because of their rugged design and the dark industrial colours that they are available in.

These boots can also be worn with a variety of looks whether it would be the All Saints look with the jeans tucked in or an outfit you would wear with a pair of Timberlands with the jeans turned up. Lastly, my pick of the collection has to be the Baggy Boot in the mustard colour.

The thing is, a lot of assumptions can be made before even trying something – as the saying goes, ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ – so I felt compelled to try a pair of these things on, after hearing so many female wearers explain how comfy and warm they are.

Now, I have to admit. These things are impressive! The inner sole is lined with wool along with the rest of the boot inners making it feel very slipper-like; in fact, this is why they are often suggested to be worn without socks.

Anyhow, aside from now knowing they are ultra-comfy, it doesn’t take away the issue of Uggs being, on the whole, hideously ugg-ly.

Well, I think I may have found a solution – the recently introduced Men’s Classic Short Bomber in Chestnut. The boot comes in a classy chocolate coloured leather finish (as opposed to the suede-like outer usually associated with the boots) which makes them look a little more rugged and man like than the ‘outdoor slipper boots for women’ type we are more normally accustomed to.

Released from Vans Vault as part of their winter collection these two colourways, Almond/Turtledove and Coffee/Turtledove (Turtledove? really, they couldn’t think of another colour along the lines of Brown), are ideal for the subtle winter palette. Although you might not want to wear them all the time, firstly even though its made from premium leather any type of material will takes it’s toll on the winter weather and secondly, as it’s going for £140 you wouldn’t want to ruin them for the first reason would you? But don’t let those reasons go against them as the detailing of the stitches and the custom Del Barco logo makes up for it.

Well its no longer the Summer and you might notice that your ankles will turn a shade of blue if you try to pull this look off during the winter months. Instead of blue ankles you can grab a pair of Sperry X Band of Outsiders Chukka boots!

Even though these are not 100% nautical they do carry some of the characteristics of the trend. Sperry became extremely popular during the summer for there unusually coloured boat shoes and Band of Outsiders is one of my favourite designers at the moment.

A Man in Uggs - Weird?

For a few years now the UGG boot phenomenon has been steadily progressing as more and more women can be seen out shopping on a cold day or even on their way to the office wearing what I personally used to describe as “furry moon boots”. I could never really understand why these monstrosities were so popular with the fairer sex, they don’t particularly make any woman (even the most gorgeous of them) look good and coupled with this they cost upwards of £120! So why have these strange furry moon boots become so popular with the guys and should they really be part of our shoe collections? Read on to see what the Stylenerds think.

The general consensus among most guys at the pub is that they would never be caught dead in a pair of UGG boots, many don’t even like to see them on girls, yet why has it become such a common sighting on the streets of some of the countries biggest cities? In truth these sheepskin-lined boots have been dividing the female fashion set for years now – with some loving the squishy comfort shoes, while others would rather walk over broken glass than be seen dead in them. I believe that this will be the trend with the boots for men, some, unfortunately, will like them, will others wont even entertain the thought, and if they do I imagine they’ll lock that thought up and throw away the key.

Even the fact that celebs including David Beckham, Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck are said to be fans doesn’t seem to be doing much to sway them. Although a few footie fans were impressed to hear City star Sean Wright Phillips has recently been seen sporting them at training (oh dear!)

So this is the part where we would normally give you some info on where to buy yourself a pair and how much they’ll set you back but I just can’t do it. I refuse to be responsible for contributing to the sight of a couple out shopping together wearing the same coloured UGG boots.

Stylenerds verdict: Stay clear at all costs, spend your £140 on a gadget, your car or even 35 Big Mac meals from Mcdonalds just stay clear of the UGG Store in Westfields…oops!

For comfort and durability, I find nothing better than to chukk (sic) on a pair of desert boots.

Clarks

The price (£67 on the official store, cheaper elsewhere) and sturdiness of Clarks footwear mean they’re impeccable for daily use, with the crepe sole everlasting. The official site has nine colourways to choose from; some suede, some leather.

At three times the price of the Clarks (£150+), New York-based Opening Ceremony provide a much smarter alternative. Produced with a leather sole, they can’t withstand a beating [for the record, I would never attempt to beat anybody*] as well as the Clarks but, what they lack in permanency, they more than make up aesthetically.

You could just as easily pair them with fancy trews as you with could jeans.

Three pairs take my fancy: navy suede (pictured), black leather and caramel leather.

Common Projects

Although produced in Italy, Common Projects is another company based out of the Big Apple. As with all CP footwear, these desert boots are minimalistic (two lace holes), luxurious and have absolutely no external branding (save for the obligatory gold stamp on the heel – serial number/size/colour code respectively.)

The soft suede and rubber sole mean they’re perfect for a casual affair (no Gordon Ramsey.)

The white pair are my all time favourite desert boot; no fuss, no frills, no furbelows.  They’re now nigh on impossible to locate, having been released in the Spring.

Various online retailers still have stock of the grey and black colourways, whilst for £169 you can cop the beige at oki-ni.

Shofolk

An honourable mention goes to these Armstrong brown (sorry, ‘bitter chocolate’) Shofolk chukkas.

They feature a suede back panel, soft leather upper and contrasting white sole.  Less sleek than the Common Projects, they also have a 2-hole lace formation, which results in a tidy appearance.
